I walked into the crowded courtroom, heart pounding with anxiety. The paternity test hearing was finally here, and I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t remember anything else about her. And yet, here I was, faced with the possibility that I might be the father of her child.

I sat nervously in the waiting room of the courthouse; my mind raced with a million different scenarios. How had I ended up here? But I kept drawing a blank, and the court order demanded that I perform a DNA test to confirm or deny her claim that I was the father of her child. From the little I knew of her, this was just another ploy to get money out of me.

I fidgeted in my seat and looked around the room at the other men waiting for their tests. They all seemed as uncomfortable as I felt; their eyes darted around the room as they tried to avoid eye contact with anyone else.

As I walked toward my seat, I saw Zara sitting in the back of the courtroom, her eyes filled with worry and concern. I knew she was just as nervous as I was, and I wanted to reach out and hold her hand, reassure her that everything would be okay. But I couldn’t. Not yet.

The judge called the case, and the woman I vaguely recognized stepped forward. She held her toddler in her arms. She appeared tired and worn out, the bags under her eyes a testament to her sleepless nights. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her.

The judge asked her to state her name for the record.

“Shayla Stapleton,” she replied with a shaky voice.

The tension in the room was palpable; my heart raced faster with each passing moment. The judge then turned to me and asked for my name and relation to the child.

“I don’t know,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “I’ve never had sex with that woman before.”

The judge looked at me skeptically, clearly not impressed with my answer. The woman looked at me with cold, accused eyes, and a chill ran down my spine. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy.

The judge ordered me to perform the DNA test, and I had no choice but to comply. Finally, my name was called, and I went down the hallway to the testing room. The woman was already there, sitting in a chair with a baby in her arms. When I entered, she looked up at me, and I saw her face clearly for the first time.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Johnson,” the nurse said, breaking the silence that hung in the room. “Please have a seat here.”

She motioned to a chair beside the woman, and I reluctantly sat down. The nurse went about her business, explained the procedure, and took my sample. I tried not to look at the woman, but she stared at me, her eyes boring into my skin.

“Is there something you want to say to me?” I finally asked her, unable to stand the silence any longer.
